Modernist route in Barcelona

February 23, 2014

This post is not about modernist bars in Barcelona, it is just a route about modernist buildings in Barcelona and interesting bars next to these special places. Just our selection!

Let’s start with the most tourist modernist buildings, placed in Passeig de Gràcia, the luxuriest street in the city:

Casa Batlló

One of the most famous building of Antoni Gaudí, Casa Batlló (Passeig de Gràcia 43) was built between 1904-1906. It is placed next to Casa Amatller (Passeig de Gràcia 41, 1898-1090, Puig i Cadafalch) and near Casa Lleó Morera (Passeig de Gràcia 35, 1905, Domènech i Muntaner).

In Casa Amatller you will find a café, Faborit, inside the building you can have a juice, coffee or chocolate. See our visit there: https://notonlyeating.wordpress.com/2015/08/01/faborit-barcelona/

Updated in July 2015: Vinçon has been closed. In this case, we recommend you a shop instead a bar. In Vinçon (Passeig de Gràcia 96) you can find household items, from cookware to paintings, etc. But the special point is that it is placed in an old modernist house. If you visit second floor you can see  this house decorated  with design furniture, go out to the modernist terrace and go back to the shop crossing a little garden.

Casa Milà (La Pedrera)

Known as “La Pedrera”, it is placed in Provença St, 261-265, in the corner with Passeig de Gràcia. It was created by Antoni Gaudí and built between 1906 and 1910. Inside the building, and with an entrance in Passeig de Gràcia 92, it is a comfortable bar with reasonable prices. And, in Summer, there are concerts in the roof terrace, that follows modernism style. We recommend you the experience!

Casa Fuster

Casa Fuster (Passeig de Gràcia 132) was created by Lluís Domènech Montaner and built between 1908-1911. Now it is a luxury hotel, but you can visit the cafè on the first floor. In summer, the terrace is open and the views of the city are fantastic. Of course, prices in this cafè or in the terrace are higher than average, but a visit to this jewel of architecture is more than recommended.

Not placed in city center, but unique in the word, three special places of Barcelona:

Palau de la Música

In Palau de la Música St, 4-6, this magic building (unfortunately famous due to a theft of public money) was created by Lluis Domènech i Montaner and was built between 1905 and 1908.

There are different options around to have a drink or a meal. Here you have our recommendations: https://notonlyeating.wordpress.com/2012/08/02/sagrada-familia/

Park Güell

Park Güell (Carrer d’Olot, s/n, 08024 Barcelona) is also unique in the world. Created by Antoni Gaudí it is an exercise of imagination and one of the most important expression of modernism. A treasure of the city and a popular park since 1926. Unfortunately now you have to pay to visit and take a walk in there.

This park  is placed next to Carmelo hill. If you want to taste autentical tapas, you can go to Bar Delicias (Muhlberg,1 Carretera del  Carmelo): in the top of the popular Carmelo hill, the best way to go there is by motorcycle. Different kind of traditional tapas and good portions.

And we end this post with a group of modernist buildings not so tourist, but very interesting:

Palau Macaya

It is a building placed in  Passeig Sant Joan n.108, created by Josep Puig i Cadafalch in 1901. It can go unnoticed between other buildings, but it is a little jewel. The current owner of the building is La Caixa (Bank). During some years, the Science Museum was placed in this building. Now you can find there cultural activities: cinema, concerts, etc.

A good place near this building is Granja Petitbo (Passeig St.Joan n.82), a place decorated following a Swedish style (simple decoration, natural light and wooden tables) and where you can eat a menu or have a coffee and home-made pastry.
