From Madrid to Heaven
If you ask people from Madrid what they like most about their city, they probably tell you that people, Malasaña tapas, Sundays in La Latina , museums or walking on the “Madrid de los Austrias”. But each of them also says that heaven. And this mass (sometimes slightly contaminated) over the heads of the cats, drive them crazy.
One way to test such passion is going up to one of the terraces that crowns high buildings from Madrid and learning about the capricious clouds that come and go. So do not miss the opportunity: go up and say goodbye to nice weather during the coming wonderful weeks in autumn, when light and sunsets shine with their particular magic.
It was the start of the roof terrace’s boom. And no wonder it is one of the most special places in the city. It seems that there, one can forget the problems and see everything from a different point of view. The views are unique, from Gran Via and Alcala with reigning Metropolis , to the Cibeles and the current Council.
You can go there the whole year, as long as the CBA is open. In summer there are a small chiringuito where you can eat something. But, the rest of the year, it disappears and, in its place, remains a photo exhibition. Whatever, the price is 3 € . A must!
Cool version of hotel with outdoor pool and prohibitively expensive. It has become the most famous of the terraces to sit for a drink or be fashion dressed. At least once in your life worth going there to take a picture of the view over the castizos roofs, with the last rays of sun reflecting on the swimming pool.
It is the youngest of all, born in early September. It is located above a new gym built replacing the old Luna cinemas (yes, it seems that closing cinemas is the trend). And note modernity while you are climbing stairs, just a few steps, but better tripping over there.
Once up, the brick walls and old ceilings mixed with white chairs and large windows. Through them, facing the Plaza de la Luna, you can enjoy very nice views, with the Plaza España building in the distance.
Prices are quite reasonable for what you can expect from a terrace in Madrid: Cocktail 5.90 to 9 € , beer € 3. You can lunch and dinner in the restaurant. It also has a closed room for days of cold and rain.
Placed on the top floor of this hipster market is the restaurant Cinco Jotas. It is open all over the year, it doesn’t matter if there is good or bad weather. But, in summer, you can enjoy a small outdoor space next to the Plaza de Chueca. The views are not great, but the decoration and space make it worthwhile to spend hours there in the company of friends, couple… Any plan is valid .
Gourmet Experience ( El Corte Inglés of Callao )
The old restaurant of El Corte Inglés has become in an enlarged Gourmet Section. Going up to the ninth floor of this mall, and through the door, you’ll find an elegant place for buying high quality gastronomic products and restaurants with diverse cuisines: Burgers, Asian, Italian , Basque tapas, Mexican , ice creams … You can sit in each of them or, if your likes are not the same than your partner, you can take the food from one of the restaurants and meet in the central tables. In the background, a large window directly overlooking the Plaza de Callao while the lightning “Schweppes” turns off and on and the Gran Via continues its frenetic pace. But the views do not stay there. Out to the terrace, Madrid continues with Sol , El Palacio Real , La Almudena ,etc. It is essential to have an overview of the city from above. And drinking is not required. You can simply upload, view and continue sightseeing!
Una manera de comprobar tal pasión es acercarse a alguna de las azoteas de la capital, y conocer de cerca las caprichosas nubes que van y vienen. Así que no pierdas la oportunidad y despide al buen tiempo que se mantiene en estas maravillosas semanas otoñales. La luz y los atardeceres brillarán con magia propia.
Círculo de bellas artes
La primera que creó el boom de las azoteas. Y no es de extrañar porque es uno de los sitios más especiales de la ciudad. Parece que allí uno puede olvidar los problemas y verlo todo desde otro punto de vista. Las vistas son inigualables, desde Gran vía y Alcalá con la Metrópolis reinando, hasta la Cibeles y el ahora ayuntamiento.
Se puede subir prácticamente todo el año, siempre y cuando el CBA esté abierto. En verano han empezado a montar una terraza y un pequeño restaurante donde poder tomar algo. Pero el resto del año el chiringuito desaparece y en su lugar se queda la exposición de foto que toque. Haya lo que haya, para subir son 3€. Visita obligada.
Hotel Óscar
Versión azotea de hotel cool con piscina al aire libre y precios prohibitivos. Se ha convertido en la más famosa de las azoteas para sentarse a tomar algo o lucir el palmito. Aún así, al menos una vez en la vida merece la pena ir para sacar una foto a las vistas de los tejados castizos mientras lucen los últimos rayos de sol en el reflejo de la piscina.
Gymage
Es la más joven de todas, nació a principios de septiembre. Está situada encima de un nuevo gimnasio que han construido remplazando a los antiguos cines Luna (sí, parece que lo de cerrar cines está de moda). Y la modernidad se nota al subir las escaleras, pocas, pero mejor tropezarse.
Una vez arriba los muros de ladrillo del campanario y los techos antiguos se mezclan con sillones blancos y cristaleras. A través de ellas, que dan a la plaza de la Luna, se puede disfrutar de unas vistas muy agradables con el edificio de Plaza España a lo lejos.
En cuanto a los precios, son bastante razonables para lo que te puedes esperar de una terraza madrileña: Cócktail 5,90-9€, cerveza 3€. Se puede picar, comer y cenar en el restaurante. Cuenta además con un salón cerrado para los días de frío y lluvia.
Mercado de San Antón
Situada en el piso alto de este mercado hipster se encuentra el restaurante Cinco Jotas, abierto todo el año haga bueno o malo. Pero en verano se puede disfrutar de un pequeño espacio recogido al aire libre al lado de la plaza de Chueca. Las vistas no son gran cosa, pero la decoración y el espacio hacen que merezca la pena pasar las horas allí en compañía de amigos, pareja… Cualquier plan es válido.
Gourmet Experience (Corte Inglés de Callao)
El antiguo restaurante de El Corte Inglés ha dado paso a una sección Gourmet ampliada. Al subir a la novena planta de este centro comercial y atravesar la puerta puedes encontrar una zona elegante de venta de productos de comida y varios restaurantes con cocinas diversas: hamburguesas, asiático, italiano, pintxos vascos, mexicano, heladería… Te puedes sentar en cada uno de ellos, o si no coincides en gustos con tu acompañante cada uno puede coger la comida de un sitio diferente y juntaros en las mesas centrales. Al fondo una cristalera da directamente a la plaza de Callao mientras el luminoso de Schweppes se apaga y enciende, y la Gran vía continúa su ritmo frenético. Pero las vistas no se quedan ahí, saliendo a la terraza, Madrid continúa con Sol, El Palacio real, La Almudena… Es imprescindible para hacerse una idea general de la ciudad desde las alturas. ¡Y la consumición no es obligada, basta con subir, verlo y continuar haciendo turismo!
